How We Test Gold — And Why We Do It On Camera
Every offer we make — walk-in or mail-in — starts with the same thing: testing and weighing your gold, on camera. Here is what the tests are, what they tell us, and what it means for your offer.
Step 1 — The scale
Everything starts with weight on a calibrated jeweler's scale, measured in grams. Weight is half of your offer's math (weight × purity × live spot price), so it is measured on camera and recorded with your items.
Step 2 — Electronic testing
We verify gold with Sigma electronic testing — the same verification named on our product listings. An electronic tester reads the metal's conductivity through the surface, which catches plated and filled pieces without damaging your item. It is fast, non-destructive, and hard to fool.
Step 3 — Confirmation tests where they are needed
- Acid testing — the classic karat check. A tiny scratch sample confirms purity when a stamp is missing or a reading needs a second opinion.
- Magnet and stamp checks — quick screens for obvious fakes and mismarked pieces.
- Stone and non-gold deductions — stones, clasps, and non-gold parts are identified so you are paid accurately on the gold itself.
You may also hear about XRF analyzers — lab-grade machines that read metal composition with X-rays. Whatever the tool, the goal is identical: an accurate purity reading, verified more than one way. Our full authentication standards are on the Authentication & Quality Assurance page.
Why on camera?
Recording the process protects both sides. For mail-in customers, it means a stranger is not quietly grading your gold in a back room: your package is opened, weighed, and tested on the record. It is the same transparency 230K+ people watch daily on TikTok @ddpawnloans — and it is why we publish our payout of up to 90% of melt value instead of hiding behind "top dollar" claims.
